guatemala program
Food security and clean water as well as literacy are the most important programs we can support in Guatemala.
METAD partners with Hope of Life International in the Zacapa region providing 40’ container loads of food, as well as deworming medicines and medical disposable supplies. There are over 14 million people in Guatemala with 75% of them under the poverty level. It is estimated that 54,000 people go hungry every day, and according to UNICEF nearly half of the children suffer from severe malnutrition which can also lead to the children suffering brain damage. Literacy, infant mortality, maternal mortality and starvation are among the highest in this region. METAD personnel recently went with a team to rescue a 10-month old baby girl weighing 10 lbs. Her 22 year-old mother had stop nursing her because she was five months pregnant with child number six. The baby was brought to the HOL hospital where the doctor stated she most likely would not have survived another month. These child rescues are happening weekly with as many as five children a week being found and rescued. Once rescued and brought back to health, these children are monitored for a minimum of two years by HOL and may be adopted within their child sponsorship program. In Quetzaltenango METAD sponsors a cervical screening program for Xilia region among the Mayan women. We are in our 11th year of supporting doctors who travel to the villages to examine and help the women identify and receive treatment for this horrific disease. In addition, METAD sends medical equipment and supplies for the hospitals and clinics in this region. Food security is needed here as well and will be a new focus and campaign for METAD in 2024.
